In the pipe

Well, I've just this minute fired off my latest, and probably last, attempt to stay in the financially lucrative and high prestige world of science ...

The position I've applied for is entitled "marine biophysical modeller", and the role will be to run, analyse and publish biogeochemical aspects of the new NEMO model. In something of a change from my current position, this is a step up the scientific food chain. That has salary benefits, but brings with it pretty big expectations about getting funding. From the job specification, a day or so a week would be spent chasing cash. That's quite a change for me. Still, it comes to all research scientists sooner or later and, to be fair, I've dodged this particular "bullet" for a long time now.

Anyway, the plan appears to be that interviews will take place next month (September), and if I'm successful I should be in-post in time for the end of my current position. Of course, if I'm not successful, well, that'll see the start of an altogether new career, possibly in high street retail!

I've got your blog in my bloglines, so I won't miss an episode! I've been enjoying the bit about the ducks, but I figured that since you responded to my career-stuff, I shall respond to yours.

I don't think there is anything wrong with staying with what you know or an established path. You are lucky to have made it this long without having to actively chase the cash (by which I assume you'll be grant writing and smoozing the public?). Many of the things I"m looking at make HS teaching seem rosy in terms of both pay and hours, so I frankly don't know what the hell I'm doing.

You'll be jealous. My window bird-watching (which starting today will include frequent sketching) often includes hummingbirds.

Howdy! Thanks very much for your note. While you're not quite the first person to visit and leave a comment, you are the first whose on-line identity still exists. As such, you're eminently more important!

My first visitor liked what I had to say about Jonathan Raban's latest novel but was totally deleted by Blogger before I even had a chance to check out their own blog. Which suggests that they were a spammer or something. Ho-hum.

Anyway, I hope my blog's not too boring or offensive, and please enjoy the ducks while you're here.
